Geoffrey Fletcher is an Oscar-winning screenwriter and director, Harvard graduate, NYU-trained filmmaker, educator, and mentor, known for socially conscious storytelling across genres.
Harvard College graduate (BA in Psychology); earned an MFA in Film Directing from NYU’s Tisch School
Began making films as a child—using video cameras and action figures—and apprenticed under Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee
Wrote the short film Magic Markers, earning recognition from the Directors Guild and Sundance
Achieved a major breakthrough adapting Sapphire’s novel Push into the film Precious (2009); Fletcher became the first African American to win an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2010
Served as adjunct professor at Columbia and NYU, later named SCAD Honorary Chair in Dramatic Writing in 2015
Directorial debut: Violet & Daisy (2011), notable at festivals and winner of SCAD’s Cinevation Award
Screenwriter for Trial by Fire (2018) and Executive Producer/Animation Director for Mike Tyson: The Knockout (2021)
